Chapter 106.3. The Second Year at the Academy - Coloring the Dark Night (3)

Chapter 106.3. The Second Year at the Academy - Coloring the Dark Night (3)

Lending suitable clothes to those without jackets, we ventured into the backyard.

With white breaths, everyone looked around.

There were no stairs or ladders to climb onto the roof in the backyard.

"Stay near the forge. I'll make it climbable now."

I used the soil in the backyard as a catalyst and activated [Earth Wall] diagonally.

Soil walls protruded one after another, and soon a slope was formed.

Since it was too steep on one side, I bent it in the middle.

Of course, it comes with a dance floor. It's quite a masterpiece.

Amidst applause from everyone, Lambert knocked on the soil wall and shook his head in disbelief.

"Is this how the wall magic is used? Then the outer wall becomes meaningless."

"Not quite. It's narrow, making it difficult to climb, and siege weapons are more effective."

"And it's a special case, too."

Continuing my words, Elphimia looked at the top surface of the wall.

"It's difficult to activate at the same angle, and there are hardly any seams. It even has anti-slip measures. This would be impossible for an average mage."

"It would be appreciated if you could recognize that."

Decoration consumes much more magical power and imagination than just a wall.

Even for me, anti-slip measures are the most I can do. I actually wanted to make stairs.

Listening to Elphimia's words, Lambert and Felix were relieved, but if one has a high affinity for the earth element and abundant mana, it's easy to use the catalyst to make holes in the wall.

There may be a few magicians who can do that, but there are probably more than the wall in front of us. It's a problem before the defensive wall.

Well, Lambert will eventually notice, and I don't want to deal with his complicated expressions, so I'll keep quiet.

Later, Ted and Jemma guided everyone, and everyone finished climbing onto the roof.

The first-time quins were looking at the scenery of Selen with sparkling eyes.

While finding their sight adorable, I checked the ground under my feet.

We were standing in the part sealed with [Earth Wall].

There were no cracks, and it didn't seem to deteriorate.

But—why are there grooves here too?

On the flat stone wall, clean joints were engraved.

Did those guys at Dobar's place not only shave off the protrusions but also carve here? Who's going to see this, on the roof?

As I sighed at their ridiculousness, one by one, the lights went out.

I regained consciousness and watched with everyone.

Then the bell announcing the end of the year and the new year rang in Selen.

As various magical lights adorned the night sky, Quins and Kyle were gaping.

It must be different from outside the outer wall.

"The firepower with short arrows..."

When I turned my gaze to the voice, Jonas was shooting [Fire Bolts].

Mostly basic magic was flying around, but intermittently, intermediate magic was also being launched.

Basic magic inevitably takes the spotlight.

And the customary [Bulwark] was activated, and cheers erupted from everyone.

Helena seemed to have skipped it; [Fire Spread] wasn't activated.

I actually wanted to see that. I'll negotiate next time.

"Aren't you doing it this year?"

When the fireworks magic subsided, Lambert asked.

Looking around, last year's participants were looking at me and Elphimia with hopeful eyes.

"I used quite a bit of magic to make the scaffolding."

Last year, I competed with Elphimia in shooting magic, but my magic power is already less than half.

"And it's not much different from last year, right? I can activate a few [Fireballs], but it's not that interesting—"

"[Fireballs]!?"

Jonas showed an unexpected reaction.

Interrupting [Fire Bolts], he approached me as if to attack.

"You can use them, intermediate magic!?"

"W-Well—yeah, I can, but why now? You just saw the [Earth Wall] earlier, didn't you?"

"That's not magic! Fire attributes are true magic!"

What a harsh thing to say.

It's incredibly useful, you know, even for your footing.

"Do you happen to use other intermediate ones too!? Like [Fire Spear], [Fire Wall], [Fire Spread], [Lava Flow]!?"

"Don't casually mix in advanced ones."

As far as I know, only Yarz Alaster can use [Lava Flow].

It's a disastrous magic that turns the surroundings into a lava zone, and if someone activates it at a festival, it would be a disaster.

Moreover, such magic continues until the effect time expires even if the caster dies.

It's no wonder the council hesitated to pursue Yarz.

Anyway, Jonas seems to be a fanatic of fire attribute magic.

It would be quite a commotion if he found out Helena's favorite magic.

Probably, he'd drop out out of laziness.

Jonas seemed disappointed to learn that I only have [Fireballs], but he insisted, "Even just that! Up close!"

Is he planning to crash and burn?

Ignoring the stalker-like arsonist yelling next to me, I pondered.

It's fine to scatter [Fireballs] casually, but that's not very artistic.

And the new magic is all quite plain—.

Suddenly, an idea came to me, and I whispered to Elphimia.

"It sounds interesting. I'll help."

Saying that, Elphimia concentrated, and suddenly, the entire roof was enveloped in blue light.

The quins were astonished, clinging to Dana.

Lambert and the others soon realized what had happened and looked around their surroundings with keen interest.

"It was probably [Sanctuary]. It's the first time I've received such magic. I don't feel anything."

"It doesn't affect anyone except the deceased. So, where do you want to raise it?"

"In the center, please."

Elphimia activated [Light] in the center of [Sanctuary].

It's just a light magic, but overlapping with the blue light, it looked quite beautiful.

While everyone was captivated, I beckoned to Lily.

"I heard you learned [Handy Soil]?"

"Yes, just a while ago."

"Then, could you do me a favor? Just a bit more than usual."

Curiously tilting her head, Lily began to generate soil on the roof.

"Is this enough?"

"Yeah, that's plenty. Thanks."

Generating several buckets of soil, Lily stopped her magic.

It seemed she was inexperienced with consecutive activations, as there was sweat on Lily's forehead even though it was winter.

I crouched down and scooped up the soil.

It's soil suited to her.

It seems to have nutrients, and it would grow well unless it's a plant with strong habits.

While still touching the soil, I activated [Operate Soil].

In front of Lily's surprised eyes, the vine of soil extended to the sky.

The vine touched the [Light], and at the same time, spread out into a mesh pattern.

And in the blue-glowing night sky, countless patterns began to appear.

Even though it looks plain, it becomes a silhouette when it's against the light.

Admiration leaked from everyone for the kaleidoscope-like unfolding of light and shadow.

Glancing sideways, I saw Lily also looking up with moist eyes. She probably thought she couldn't participate in the shooting magic because it's life magic.

And Elphimia was speaking to another life magic user.

"[Pure Water]."

"Y-Yes!"

When Nails produced water, Elphimia manipulated it faster than it could spill.

In the area of [Sanctuary], tendrils of water reflecting the light and tendrils of soil creating shadows danced.

Before I knew it, even the residents of neighboring apartment buildings and nearby residents were looking up at us.

I wonder if Emily and Ginny's families are among them.

To entertain them a bit, I manipulated the soil.

Since water tendrils were also spread out, it required quite a bit of concentration.

Elphimia's operational ability was quite remarkable, too.

In the midst of it, Elphimia suddenly shaped a water horse and let it run on the water meadow.

Applause erupted from the roofs and nearby.

Damn, I can't lose for Lily's sake.

I countered by summoning a unicorn and letting it run on the water meadow.

"Don't use it on your own!"

"Haha, of course, I'll run if there's a meadow. It's a unicorn, you know?"

Elphimia grimaced and changed the meadow to a phoenix.

In a panic, I changed the unicorn to a pegasus to avoid falling.

"It would've been fine if you fell."

"Haha, too easy."

"No, you wouldn't have fallen."

Lambert's retort aside, Elphimia and I laughed defiantly.

And we continued to create creatures one after another, competing and finally starting a battle with earth and water monsters.

The adventurers and quins were excited.

"It's starting again..."

"Again?"

"In the joint exercise from the other day—"

At Lola's question, Lambert began explaining about the joint exercise in a kind and gentle manner.

You guys don't get it.

I'm not fighting for you mature guys.

I'm fighting for Lily who cooperated, and for the children who support us.

The stage of the blue light turned into a battlefield, and fierce battles unfolded.

Receiving replenishments from Lily and Nails, our battle continued.

Soil can engulf opponents, but Nails is more accustomed to magic, so the replenishments were fast.

A long-term battle is disadvantageous.

I focused my consciousness and summoned a dragon.

Seeing the earth dragon with its wings spread to the limit, Elphimia gave instructions.

"Nails, more water!"

"Yes!"

In response, Elphimia also created a water dragon.

But that was anticipated.

I concentrated even more and transformed the earth dragon.

"[Immortal Multi-Headed Dragon] Haruva! Can you reproduce that!?"

"There's no way you have that much soil, right?! You secretly added more, didn't you!?"

"T-They found out."

The sudden New Year's battle ended with Lambert declaring a foul.

I apologized to Lily, apologized back, and shot magic with the remaining magical power.

As Quins and others reached their limit while nibbling on the remaining food and sweets, the New Year's celebration came to an end.

Ted and Nails escorted Emily and Ginny, and Jemma, reluctant, was sent to Dana's house with Elphimia and others.

Afterward, Lambert, Felix, Ted, and the others who had returned lay down in the living room.

Everyone seemed to have extra energy, as no one slept, and the conversation continued until the sky turned white, lamenting the passing year.
