Demon Prince 38.2

Test

Chapter 38.2. I Registered As An Adventurer

The school has only recently been established. And it seems that many adventurers cannot read or write. For those born into poverty, there’s often no time to learn to write due to the need to work. In this regard, we’re very fortunate. Thanks to my memories from my previous life, I can write without needing to study in this life, but I think I was fortunate even considering my previous circumstances. There were children in my past life’s world who were born into environments where they couldn’t get an education.

"Jun-sama, a moment."

"What is it, Sebasto?"

Sebasto spoke to me in a whisper.

"You shouldn’t fill out all the fields for the emblem you hold."

"Why not?"

"The information of those registered with the Adventurer’s Guild is shared with guilds in other countries. Including guilds in countries that still view Elmbarn as an enemy. Remember the assassins who attacked before? It’s best to keep information to a minimum."

I see. There haven’t been any issues since then, but the connections of those assassins are still unknown. It’s wise to be cautious until we know who they are.

"Well then, this is done… yes, it’s written."

"Ah, I see. So you have the dual sword emblem. That’s impressive."

"Yes, thank you."

The dual sword emblem is a lower-tier emblem, but I obtained it just before turning twelve. It’s the result of my training with Master Cayen. Though it’s a lower-tier emblem, acquiring it usually takes several years of training. Given that, it’s indeed impressive. I’m sure the Demon God’s emblem also played a part.

"Your registration is now complete. Next, I’ll give you the standard explanation given to all new adventurers."

"Yes, please."

"Firstly, adventurers are ranked from A to F, and S. The rank determines the types of quests you can take. F is the lowest, and S is the highest. As a new adventurer, Jun-sama, you will be ranked F."

"Yes."

"To advance in rank, you need to complete quests or achieve significant accomplishments."

"What kind of accomplishments?"

"Discovering unknown ruins, identifying or eliminating threats not reported to the guild, and so on."

Well, that’s pretty much what I expected.

"Unreported threats refer to powerful magical beasts or bandit groups that are not usually found around here."

"Bandit groups… are there any around here?"

"None reported around the capital at the moment. I don’t think there are any in the area."

That’s good. I’d prefer not to kill or be killed if possible.

"Next, if you fail or don’t complete a quest, there are generally no penalties, depending on the reason. However, if you repeatedly fail or leave quests incomplete, you might face rank downgrades or expulsion. Also, if you accept a quest that’s beyond your capability and end up dying, that’s your responsibility, so be cautious."

Dying is your own responsibility. That’s expected, but what if there’s information not included in the quest details? Is that still considered your responsibility?

"The guild does review quest details to some extent, but current information might not be the same a few days later. Assessing these things is a necessary skill for adventurers. So please choose quests carefully, okay?"

It’s either a common question or he’s reading my expression. Sebasto answers before Wushu can ask. Probably both.

"Do you have any questions so far?"

Wushu, who seemed anxious at first, is now calm, likely because he’s accustomed to this process.

"What if I have to kill a magical beast that isn’t part of a quest?"

"In that case, you can still count it as a quest completion if you bring back a part of the beast as proof or the entire carcass. However, if someone else has already completed the quest, you can sell the carcass but won’t receive a reward for completing the quest. Also, meat from magical beasts intended for consumption should be bled quickly for higher prices."

"I see. Understood."

"Anything else?"

"No, I’m fine for now."

"Then let’s move on to explaining the difficulty of magical beast subjugations."

Magical beasts come in various strengths and dangers.

"The difficulty of subjugating magical beasts is generally indicated by the adventurer's rank. For example, an A-rank adventurer should be able to handle a difficulty A magical beast. However, this applies only if the beast is alone. For instance, in the northern forest, there is a magical beast called Bigbee with a difficulty rating of E. But since they exist in swarms, exterminating them along with their nest raises the difficulty to B."

Bigbee is a bee about the size of a pigeon. It won’t attack unless provoked, but the honey it produces is extremely delicious, so there are frequent quests to harvest it.

"There are many magical beasts that act in groups. One person can’t handle all the beasts and situations alone. Therefore, the guild recommends that adventurers form parties. Jun-sama, please form a party as well."

"If I form a party, how does it affect the quests I can take? If there is an A-rank member in the party, can we accept A-rank quests even if there are F-rank members?"

"It’s fine. However, it’s better if party members are close in rank. This reduces potential problems. Also, if high-rank adventurers are in the same party as lower-rank adventurers, there can be perceptions of freeloading. Envy can lead to troublesome interactions, so keep that in mind when forming your party."

Ah, that sounds about right. Jealousy is frightening, no matter the world.

"Are there any other questions?"

"Not for now, I think."

"Alright then, your adventurer’s card will be ready soon. Please wait a moment."

The completed adventurer’s card resembled a dog tag worn by American soldiers. It had my name, number, and registration location on it. It starts out wooden, and becomes a metal plate as your rank increases.

By the way, Noella and Sebasto are D-rank, and Lily is E-rank. The adventurer’s card becomes a copper plate from D-rank, and Lily still has the wooden card.

"Well then, let’s see if we can pick up a quest right away."

I head to the bulletin board where the available quests are posted. There are no high-reward quests for F-rank. I don’t plan to take on difficult quests right away. Since it’s my first time, I’ll start with something simple.

"Lily, do you have any recommendations? Something for beginners?"

"Umm… Oh, I think this one is good. It’s a quest to gather medicinal herbs in the northern forest. They’re common herbs and shouldn’t be too hard to find."

That seems like a safe and standard choice. I’ll go with that.

"Alright, I’ll take that one. I’ll go and accept it now. Thanks, Lily."

"Yes."

I go back to the receptionist, Wushu, to accept the quest.

"Excuse me, Wushu. I’d like to accept this quest."

"Oh, you’re taking a quest right away? Good luck! And come back to see me again. Oh, maybe you’ve fallen for me? Oh dear, I didn’t think I’d charm even the Demon Prince! I guess my beauty is a sin, isn’t it? Such a guilty pleasure!"

I can imagine why she’s popular. With assets like those, how could she not be? Her face is also quite cute. But her previous anxious demeanor, given she was dealing with the Demon Prince, seems completely gone now. She must be naturally like this. I’ll gracefully ignore that. I sense some pressure from behind.

"This is a quest for gathering medicinal herbs. If you have a sample, could you show it to me?"

Even with the rise of healing magic users and the establishment of hospitals, there is still a demand for medicinal herbs. They’re used in magical potions and for preventative medicine.

"Don’t ignore me, you know. Umm, oh, this quest? Good choice, it’s a safe one. Some people choose dangerous quests right from the start and end up dying quickly. They’re the ones who never listen to advice."

"That sounds tough. I have no intention of doing anything reckless, so please don’t worry."

"Please do. If something happened to the Demon Prince, I’d be in trouble too. Here’s your paperwork and a sample of the herbs. Take it with you, but please return it afterward."

"Thank you. I’ll head out now."

"Have a good trip. Be careful!"

And so, I’ll head to the northern forest to complete my first quest.
