Chapter 138.2. Rescue

"What?"

"Huh! Well... there's a report that most of the soldiers here have died."

Marume's mouth opened dumbfounded at the words of his saluting subordinate. What did he just say?

"Well, it seems that the soldiers led by Date suffered heavy casualties in a recent battle with a horde of monsters that appeared."

"Battle casualties? They died in battle?"

"Huh! They managed to repel the horde of monsters led by trolls, but most of the soldiers died. The remaining soldiers intend to carry on the will of Date and stay to defend the fortress..."

His mouth twitched. He glanced outside the window, but there were no collapsed parts of the fortress wall, no bloody traces.

There was only an empty guard post where machine guns should have been placed. It was strange for a fortress. Even if the ammunition ran out, there should have been guns left, but not a single one was visible, and there were no vehicles either.

"It's suspicious, it's a lie! Is there really no one here?"

The subordinate soldier seemed to understand that it was a lie too, as he avoided making eye contact.

"Was it a conspiracy? Were they planning to leave just to collect those troublesome people? But even if they stayed here, there wouldn't be any support from the country. I see, so that's it!"

It would mean they belonged somewhere other than the country. Perhaps they were absorbed by some clan.

"But to provide support at the level of maintaining the fortress... The Three Houses? It would require a considerable amount of money and resources to own this fortress."

"There's a possibility it's not the Three Houses, but it's best to leave this place now, Colonel."

With a bitter expression, Marume nodded. Indeed, they should move before the refugees turn into rioters.

The idiots peeking out of the bus windows are still insulting the refugees. The refugees are shouting back. It's only a matter of time before it explodes.

"Let's move quickly. Depart the buses!"

He gave up on finding Date and the others. There's no longer any value here. It had become a trivial task.

Marume sighed as he waited for the buses to depart. But as soon as he thought the lead bus had moved, it immediately stopped.

Another problem? Marume sighed as he looked into it, and the subordinate who was examining the stopped bus approached.

"Colonel! The tires of 10 buses, including the lead vehicle, have been destroyed! The tires themselves need to be replaced, but there are no spare tires. We need to go back to the inner city to get replacement tires."

His head shook sharply. It was too terrible a report. When were the bus tires destroyed? Was it sabotage? Although they didn't allow the refugees to come close.

Glancing at the bus, there were idiots insulting from the windows and refugees confronting them. There were no soldiers to be subordinates, nor were there any guns or vehicles to be recovered. There was no reason to be here at all.

"Sigh... Abandon the buses! They're probably the Miyoshi family's property. Forget it! They'll probably be dead by the time they return to get the bus tires. Push the idiots into the remaining half of the buses!"

"Understood!"

It didn't matter anymore. Marume decided to efficiently carry out the mission. In other words, he decided to treat the passengers as luggage.

It didn't matter anymore. Marume was a soldier. He decided to carry out the mission reliably.

Forget about the buses. There was a possibility of them being destroyed and abandoned in this dangerous area.

"It's cramped. I'm the wife of part of the Tops!"

"We're elites!"

"Don't mess with me!"

He laughed as he departed, leaving behind the complaining luggage that had been unloaded from the buses, and crammed into the remaining space. It's only a few hours' journey anyway.

The refugees look at him with resentful expressions, but they probably won't meet again.

They depart from the fortress and move on. As they advance through the ruins, Marume absentmindedly touches the sword he holds, looking bored.

"I might as well join the Kamiyo clan."

It's an up-and-coming clan. And it's full of momentum, perfect for climbing up. That Selica Kamiyo has momentum.

"And... they're skilled at making weapons. They might be the best clan for the future."

He draws the sword he holds just a little. The blade sparkles with a brilliance like a transparent crystal.

"This weapon has amazing power. Unbelievable."

Using the same road they came, Marume and his group return. Outside the window, many monster corpses get scattered.

Not just kobolds, but orcs too, torn apart and lying dead.

"I might be able to take on an entire army by myself."

He sheathes the Japanese sword and chuckles.

It was the horde of monsters that attacked when they were heading towards the fortress. Their numbers exceeded a hundred, and they lay all over the roads. There were no longer any living monsters.

Marume squints his eyes, feeling faintly the arrival of a new era dominated by high-level skilled individuals.

It's an unbelievable story, but even so, such a world seems interesting.
