Chapter 138.1. Rescue

At the Tsukuba Line Fortress, shouts echoed. Angry voices intermingled, and the sorrowful cries of people resounded.

Well, well. I'm not good with this kind of lamenting scene. Come to think of it, in the ruins, more people were pretending to seek help but actually attacking, rather than genuinely seeking assistance.

Indeed, the ruins are harsh. The Watchman muttered while smiling wryly as he observed the situation.

"You're supposed to be the country's rescue team!"

"Why can't you take us with you?"

"Take care of the citizens!"

"Help us!"

Many people gathered around armored vehicles and buses. The military held rifles, surrounding the area, intimidating, and preventing anyone from approaching.

"Don't come any closer! We'll shoot!"

"It's not a warning. We can easily get permission to shoot at you!"

"Don't come!"

Amidst the swirl of shouts and chaos, soldiers shouted and fired warning shots. Gunshots rang out, and people looked on with frustration, sensing the seriousness and danger from the soldiers' demeanor. They just watched from a distance.

The Watchman, relieved that it didn't escalate to fatalities, observed from the top of the wall, through the eyes of a shadow cat.

In such an atmosphere, there was a man who couldn't hide his frustration. Inside a jeep, he impatiently looked around, holding a Japanese sword sheathed in its scabbard.

He was Lieutenant Colonel Marume. A nervous military man, known as one of the four elites of the inner city, had recently been promoted. He thought he was finally getting recognized, but he had been assigned an outrageous task right after his promotion.

Namely, the containment of refugees at the Tsukuba Line Fortress. He clicked his tongue, feeling like he had drawn the short straw. He regretted accepting the request.

"Have the refugees been contained? Why do I have to do such a job?"

I'm a lieutenant colonel. I should be assigned tasks like recovering refugees from the front lines to someone else's annoyance.

"It can't be helped, Lieutenant Colonel Marume. This job is crucial for rescuing unfortunate refugees by acquiring skilled individuals."

The tired voice of the ensign from the driver's seat replied, further aggravating Marume.

Rescuing refugees. Such a ridiculous order from above. It was the Miyoshi family's intention. General Miyoshi issued the order. It get included in the contract proposed when he got headhunted.

Marume is neutral. He doesn't belong to any faction and used to think he could rise with his skills alone.

Now, he's considering which faction to join. After all, highly skilled individuals are getting pampered limitlessly, now being poached and headhunted. Although skilled, Marume, who wasn't affiliated with any faction, was being lightly regarded and was currently receiving numerous invitations.

He also received an invitation from the Miyoshi family, leading to this job. There's no bright future belonging to a declining clan. He's been told he'll be given soldiers from this fortress as subordinates. But in that case, they'll likely be disposable for dungeon conquest. Well, it wouldn't be too late to see who his subordinates would be. He thought it was a mistake to accept it for now.

"Miyoshi family. They think it's just an easy job to collect refugees. There are so many ghosts there. They deliberately hid it!"

The problem is the people around here. They don't have identification cards, meaning they don't have money and are unnecessary in the inner city. Some glare at us, women shedding tears, and children.

"Tch, ghosts is a good way to put it. I don't know who came up with it, but unlike the people in the abandoned town, they just look normal. Because they don't stink."

He hated the sight of the abandoned city and the filthy smell, but the people here were clean and didn't smell. So, he felt a little guilty.

However, he has no intention of showing justice here. He doesn't have any sense of justice. On the contrary, he was surprised that the word "justice" even came to mind. It's the word that least suits him. Marume couldn't help but smile wryly at that thought.

Outside the jeep Marume is in, large buses are parked in rows. They were prepared to transport refugees. There were a total of 20 vehicles. Five jeeps and one infantry transport truck are on guard.

We got told to save scientists and their families. They have identification cards and money in their accounts. They are people who can enter the inner city. I'm impressed that they lived in a place like this.

They seem to be excellent scientists, but more than half have factions, and have gone to Nara. The remaining scientists also seem to be excellent, but the core personnel are said to be deceased. It's a trivial matter, but there are also important things.

Apart from refugees, no, true refugees were living in this fortress. They weren't told about it. They'll certainly get abandoned, but it'll be troublesome to deal with if they turn into rioters.

"And yet... what are they doing!"

With an aura of anger, he grits his teeth and speaks. The so-called self-proclaimed refugees outside are the problem.

"My husband is part of the Tops! It's natural for elites to get saved. You guys are not parasites!"

"That's right. You're annoying. Disband quickly and live quietly here!"

"We are elites! The country's relief efforts are too slow!"

The self-proclaimed refugees stuck their heads out of the bus windows, ridiculing and sneering at the surrounding refugees with unpleasant smug faces. Are they stupid? Why are they acting like pouring oil on fire? No, not like that, but actually pouring oil? I don't understand.

The atmosphere among the refugees worsens rapidly, and it wouldn't be strange if they became rioters soon.

"They're refreshingly elite, aren't they? It seems they've had a good life even while being in this fortress."

"Ha. Even in a place like this, there's inequality. Let's return before it turns into a riot. Where is the guy called Date? Hurry up and join us."

Level 5 skilled individuals. I'm interested in what kind of guys they are.

Marume furrows his brows as the soldiers rush over to him in a flurry with a bad feeling,
