Chapter 95.5. The Second Year at the Academy - Suppliers and Servants (5)

With those words, I reached for the cup that had been placed in front of me.

"Is that bitter tea? Your tastes have changed, haven't they?"

"There are other tea enthusiasts besides me, you know? I haven't spread it in Selene because it's not our mission, but others enjoy it."

I thought the dean would like it and offered it to him before, but he stopped drinking it after just one sip.

The tea enthusiasts include me, my older brother Lakius, and Doctor Pavel, three of us.

In a city as large as Selene, there could be buried tea enthusiasts.

Well, the number isn't that important.

I nodded in agreement and reached for some sweets.

After that, the dean and Lily engaged in casual conversation.

They discussed the progress of their new cultivation methods and whether to change the fertilizer.

Lily, who had been reserved before, was now actively expressing her opinions.

However, they were taking their time getting to the main topic.

Perhaps it was because of the awkward conversation earlier, but the dean also seemed hesitant to bring it up.

After a while, the dean made an eye gesture.

Reluctantly, I decided to throw him a lifeline, but I felt a strange presence.

Someone was watching us.

Not many people were around the back of the library, but someone could come by.

However, they either passed by or headed straight to the garden.

They wouldn't be sneaking around like this.

The presence was outside the garden, somewhere in the grove of trees.

I noticed my gaze shifting, and the dean glanced sideways as well.

"What's wrong?"

"I thought someone had come, but it's probably just a passerby."

I responded in a light tone to avoid scaring Lily.

Then I focused on [Presence Detection] to pinpoint their location.

There they were, short and with an unfamiliar face.

Could it be a first-year student?

He didn't seem like the type who would become one of Luchna's followers. Maybe he really had business in the garden.

If that was the case, it was strange that he wasn't moving.

Besides, he seemed to be fixated on something.

I followed his gaze and became wary.

The boy was looking at Lily.

It was too early for that. It was unlikely that he would figure out Lily's background within a few days of enrollment.

Besides, the dean and I were afraid of her getting targeted as a distraction.

Lily was just a village girl, not someone worth searching for.

I observed the boy again and suddenly realized.

That expression... I see, that's what it is.

I eased my guard and reached for the tea.

"It's about something else, right? It seems you have the same target."

The dean raised an eyebrow, looking puzzled.

Then he also spotted the boy and widened his eyes.

"Could it be...!"

"That's right."

The dean stood up and grabbed a large pair of scissors in silence.

And then...

"This pest!"

He swung the large scissors and dashed out into the garden.

The one who was surprised was the boy.

As the disheveled old man approached, swinging the large scissors, the boy rolled away like a character from an old horror movie.

"What's going on?"

"It's a bit complicated. Don't worry about it."

"But he was shouting about his grandson... is that him?"

"No, it's not. Speaking of which, do you have any grandchildren, Dean?"

"Oh, no, I only have a son! He's not married yet..."

Contrary to the commotion outside, Lily began a casual conversation without a care.

After a while, the dean returned, panting.

"I lost him!"

"He's a student, so please handle this calmly."

"I understand. First, we should put in a request with the Adventurer's Guild..."

"You don't understand, do you? It's too late to wait until a problem arises!"

He raised his eyebrows and shouted in frustration.

He was a doting grandfather, that's for sure.

"In that case, shall we hold a school-wide assembly? If you tell them that the dean manages the garden, they probably won't approach so easily."

In response to my suggestion, the irate old man calmed down.

After a long silence, he spoke quietly.

"I wonder... do they not know? That I'm the one who manages it?"

I nodded, and the headmaster slumped, looking defeated.

Afterward, Lily asked about his grandson, and he had to explain in a convoluted manner.

Of course, it was about Luchrna. The boy's infatuation didn't matter. However, with all the commotion, Lily didn't feel much tension.

Besides, information about his granddaughter was not something that could be readily divulged.

We would take it back and consult with Ted.

The next day, the dean posted an announcement of a school-wide assembly at the entrance of the school building.

On the day of the assembly, the headmaster, dressed like a farmer, and his granddaughter Lily, who helped in the garden, took the stage.

Lily gave her speech with a bright red face.

The headmaster stood beside her, glaring at one point.

During the assembly, it must have been quite an ordeal.

The person who had been the target of the headmaster's intense hostility was the boy from that time.

And based on the discussions with my siblings, we had decided that Lily would not become his granddaughter.

However, Ted also understood the danger of Luchena, and it was concluded that he should announce it externally.

The dean must be aware of that too, right?
