Necromancer 46

Test

46. The Necromancer's Grimoire

"You want to read The Necromancer's Grimoire, is that correct?"

"Yes, I might find information related to my skill."

That day, I was meeting with the Minister of Magic.

As his title suggests, he oversees all magic-related affairs in the country.

To read the rare magical texts housed in the National Library, I needed his permission.

Since I was a Hero, my application for an audience was quickly granted.

And so, the exchange earlier.

"The battles with the Demon Lord's army are expected to intensify. I want to strengthen my skills as much as possible to prepare for it. If I can find any hints, it would be invaluable."

"I see. Of course, if it's the Hero's request, I shall grant permission."

The Minister approved without hesitation.

"Thank you very much."

"No, it is we who must thank you for fighting to save this world."

The Minister bowed deeply.

Well, it’s true I’m fighting to save this world, but the reality is,

I can’t return to my original world unless I do.

To be honest, my feelings were complicated.

Still, I didn’t intend to blame him, and even if I did, it wouldn’t change anything.

"Then, I’ll head over to borrow the grimoire right away."

"Now? In that case, I’ll issue the permit immediately. Please wait a moment."

Ten minutes later, with the permit issued by the Minister, I arrived at the National Library.

It was a massive building located diagonally across from the royal castle.

There were several grimoires related to necromancers, but I managed to borrow the highest-ranked one among them.

Grimoires are ranked based on the magic they contain.

The higher the rank, the more advanced magic one can learn.

Having successfully borrowed the highest-ranked grimoire, I immediately began reading it.

What I wanted to know was how to enhance my abilities.

To do that, I first needed to raise my skill level.

By raising my skill level, my [Necromancer] ability would become more powerful.

…Probably.

"This talks about 'magic', while mine is a skill. Strictly speaking, they’re different..."

Flip, flip, flip...

I skimmed through the pages, focusing on sections that seemed relevant.

"Improving proficiency... huh?"

One particular page caught my eye.

"In the case of magic, they refer to it as 'proficiency'. This… it’s a concept similar to skill level, isn’t it?"

I suddenly stood up, a realization striking me.

Excitement welled up inside me.

If I could figure out how to increase necromancy proficiency—

I might be able to level up my skill in the same way.

The grimoire was thick, likely around 1,000 pages.

I decided to skim through it first, saving a thorough reading for later.

By the way, I—well, all of us "Heroes"—can read this world’s text.

It seems we were granted the ability to read and understand this world’s language when we were summoned.

It’s remarkably convenient.

Thanks to that, I had no trouble deciphering the grimoire.

Now, I searched for the relevant section about improving necromancy proficiency.

The first thing that caught my eye was a passage near the beginning...

"The more undead you command, the higher your necromancy level becomes."

In other words—having more minions—

Or rather, the cumulative number of minions controlled—directly correlates to skill level?

If that’s the case, for instance, I could continuously summon and release low-tier ghosts or skeletons up to my limit.

Then, once more, summon up to the limit and release them...

By repeating this process, could I rapidly level up?

It feels like a game exploit.

Still, it seems too simple, and there might be some catch.

"But… it’s worth a try, isn’t it?"

I grinned.

Alright, I’ll make this my first candidate method and investigate other possibilities as well.
