15. Battle with the Mid-Tier Demon 1
“Hey, did you hear? A mid-tier demon has appeared.”
The next morning, I heard the news from Nayuka.
“Yeah, the king told me about it yesterday.”
“They’re sending out a subjugation team from among us.”
“Our first mid-tier battle, huh.”
Until now, we’ve only dealt with low-tier demons, and to be honest, it was a breeze.
But from now on, who knows what will happen.
Mid-tier, high-tier—and at the top, the Demon Lord.
As long as we don’t defeat all of them, humanity will never win.
And if humanity doesn’t win, we won’t be able to return to our original world.
“I want all of us to come back alive.”
“Yeah, for sure.”
We nodded to each other.
Yes, we will defeat the Demon Lord, and we will all return safely.
“But, I can’t help feeling anxious…”
Nayuka’s expression darkened.
“Well, we don’t really know how much stronger mid-tier is compared to low-tier…”
“Yeah, there’s that, but…”
Nayuka stared at me.
Her eyes darted around, as if she was hesitating to say something.
“What’s wrong?”
“Well, you know about my skill, right, Shigure?”
“[Future Sight]… right?”
“Yeah. I can see the near future with 100% accuracy, but the further the future is, the fuzzier the images get, or I only hear fragmented voices—the accuracy drops…”
Nayuka explained.
Her face was pale.
“...Did you see something bad in the future?”
“It’s just fragmented images, you know? But, probably…”
After a pause, Nayuka spoke.
Her voice trembling.
“Someone in our class… is going to die…!”
Two days later, I was chosen as one of the members to fight the mid-tier demon.
Five others from our class were selected, making it a team of six, including me, to take on the subjugation.
Here’s what happened.
A few days ago, a mid-tier demon attacked a town nearby.
All the townspeople were slaughtered, and then three neighboring towns were wiped out in the same way.
That’s when we ‘heroes’ were given the order to subjugate it.
There were reports that the demon, which had already destroyed four towns, was moving along the highway, so we were lying in wait along its path.
“It’s here.”
One of my classmates… Tanaka pointed ahead.
He’s on the baseball team and has a lively personality.
He gets along well with people in sports clubs, but he tends to look down on those in cultural clubs.
He especially looks down on me, always finding some way to belittle me.
“Don’t drag us down, especially you, Shigure.”
Tanaka snorted.
I felt annoyed for a moment, but there was no point in getting mad.
Right now, I need to focus on the subjugation mission.
I turned my gaze back ahead.
A monster covered in a black mist was approaching from the other side of the road.
It stood about three meters tall, humanoid, with a sturdy build.
A twisted horn protruded from its head.
That’s the… Blood Claw.
I held my breath.
This was my first time seeing a ‘mid-tier,’ and its sheer presence was on a whole other level.
