Demon Prince 39.2

Chapter 39.2. It Was Common Knowledge

So, that’s how it was.

To think it had already been figured out...

"Therefore, the only thing monsters attack are other monsters or races with magical powers. That’s why no animals have gone extinct because of them."

"That’s just common sense, onii-chan. Even I know that."

"I know too. I think almost anyone knows, right?"

"Lily knows too."

Wha... what?

Even Yuu and Ai, my fellow reincarnates, know this?

"Yuu and Ai, you knew too?"

"Yeah. Our parents taught us."

"Me too. Didn’t they teach you, Jun?"

"They didn’t teach me..."

"Well, Jun-sama, you’ve been learning and researching things on your own since you were little, so I think they assumed you already knew."

It’s true, I did read and research a lot on my own.

I thought I covered most of the common knowledge, though...

"Well, big brother’s got his moments where he’s a bit clueless~ hehe~"

"Yeah, I think so too~ hehe~"

With smug faces, they let out exaggerated laughs...

Mocking their older brother, huh? Time for some payback!

"Mocking your brother in this inescapable carriage? You’ll face punishment!"

"Ah, no, stop, ah!"

"Ha ha ha! I know your weaknesses, Yuu! It’s the tickle torture for you!"

"Stop, ahaha, stop, sorry, sorryyyyy~!"

"You two sure get along, huh?"

Ignoring Ai’s casual comment, I shift my target.

You’re next!

"Of course, Ai is getting her punishment too! Here I go~!"

"What? Kyah! Hey, don’t touch—ah!"

"Ha ha ha! Of course, I know your weak spots too, Ai! The same tickle torture for you!"

"Stop! Stop! That’s my weak spot! Kyahahaha! Stop ittttt!"

"Hey, hey! You’ll bite your tongue if you mess around in the moving carriage! And by the way, we’re almost there!"

It seems we’ve arrived at our destination, so I let up on the punishment.

"Alright, I’ll let you off for now."

"Ugh, big brother, you’re so mean."

"Ugh, you’ll regret this!"

Ignoring their grumbles, I step off the carriage.

Time to search for those herbs.

"Lily, where do you think the herbs are growing?"

"I think they’ll be around the forest’s edge or just inside, in sunny spots."

"How many do we need?"

"Twenty."

"Oh, and be careful not to damage the roots when you’re picking them, okay?"

"Got it. Thanks, Lily."

"Hey Jun, can you show me how?"

The four of us—Ai, Yuu, Lily, and I—begin gathering herbs.

Sebas and Noella are on watch duty.

The plant life in this world is similar to Earth’s, but there are quite a few differences.

I wonder if this herb even existed on Earth.

"How’s it going? Have we gathered enough?"

"Hmm, just a little more."

"I think there are some over that way. Ah, that bird is tasty, by the way! There!"

With a swift motion, Lily draws her bow, aims, and fires, all in a blink, neatly bringing down the bird.

Lily’s archery skills are impressive.

"Wow, Lily. You took it down so easily."

"Hehe, I’m pretty confident with a bow!"

She says this as she swiftly drains the bird’s blood and hangs it from a tree.

Her experience with hunting on her days off really shows.

"Sebas, make sure to use this bird for dinner tonight!"

"Oh-ho! Leave it to me!"

Looks like dinner just got more exciting.

I’m hoping for some fried chicken.

"So, have we got everything now?"

"Let me check. I’ll verify each one."

Yuu starts confirming the herbs with her appraisal glasses she bought earlier.

"I’ve been meaning to ask, Yuu."

"Hm? What is it, big brother?"

"If you have the Sage’s Crest, don’t you not even need those? It does the same thing, right?"

"Not quite. If something’s disguised as something else, and I don’t catch that, the Sage’s Crest would only show me the disguised information. If you want to quickly check if something’s real or fake, the appraisal glasses are faster. Plus, using the Sage’s Crest would reveal to others that I have it. If I don’t practice switching between the two, I might accidentally use it in front of people out of habit."

I see.

So, even though Yuu’s Sage’s Crest is convenient, it can’t detect fakes.

That’s an unexpected flaw.

"Well, it’s still really useful though. Yep, all the herbs are correct! Mission complete!"

"Alright. Thanks for helping, everyone. Once we’re back in the capital, how about I treat you all to something sweet? My treat."

""Yayyy!!""

"Thank you very much, Jun-sama!"

"Thanks, man!"

"Yay! Thank you, Jun-sama!"

And so, my first job as an adventurer was successfully completed.

I’m glad it ended without any unexpected incidents.

For a second, I thought a dragon might pop out or something.

Well, stuff like that doesn’t happen all the time, right?
