Chapter 29. Divine Communication
About half a year had passed since the assassination incident, and a little over a year had gone by since we began working towards establishing the school.
I had turned ten, Ai was seven, and Yuu was almost seven.
One day, while we were training in magic together, a sudden question came to my mind.
"Hey, you two."
"What?"
"What's up?"
"Remember how the gods said our souls would be high-ranked in this world, so we were born with extraordinary talents?"
"Yeah. I heard that too."
"So did I. What's the matter?"
"Well, I think our growth has been remarkable compared to others our age, but there are many people in this world who are stronger than those from previous lives, right? At least magic exists here."
"In other words, we can’t really feel if our souls are truly high-ranked."
"Yeah. And with dragons and fallen angels existing here, it makes it even harder to gauge."
"True, I see your point."
"So, I was thinking, even if people from this world were reincarnated in Japan, they might still have ordinary talents. If that's the case, it means what the gods said might be wrong."
[No, no, it's not wrong. Your souls will be high-ranked in this world. Conversely, souls from this world, if reincarnated into your world, wouldn't become high-ranked and would struggle to live properly due to the burden.]
"Whoa, what’s this sudden interruption?"
"This voice sounds familiar."
"Could it be the gods?"
[Yes. It’s the god who reincarnated you. It's been a while.]
Yuu had asked about how to contact the gods before, but there was no response when we tried.
For it to suddenly speak to us like this, something must have happened.
"Is there something that made you suddenly contact us?"
[Well, it’s been ten years since your reincarnation. I just thought I’d check in. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much progress here.]
"How can the gods have investigated for ten years with no results?"
[That foolish god seemed to have prepared thoroughly and made sure to cover their tracks. If a god hides seriously, finding them isn’t easy.]
"Ugh. I see... Well, about that earlier topic, what do you mean by burden?"
[Yes. I think I mentioned before that your souls are high-ranked and that the dimension you were in was a high-ranked one.]
"Yes, I remember."
[A high-ranked dimension is stable due to its rank. However, this stability comes with a slight burden on the soul. Therefore, reincarnating into a lower-ranked dimension releases this burden and allows the soul’s talent to flourish. Conversely, souls from a lower-ranked dimension reincarnating into a higher-ranked one will experience new burdens and lose abilities they previously had.]
"Then why are people in this world physically strong?"
[Lower-ranked dimensions are more unstable compared to higher-ranked ones, leading to harsh environments. This, in turn, makes individuals physically stronger. Various non-human races exist because they evolved to adapt to these harsh environments. When a high-ranked soul inhabits a strong physical body, it becomes a talented being.]
"Ah, so demons and beastmen are just regular races, then?"
[Yes, exactly. They’re not the same as the common images of demons or demon lords you had in your world.]
"What do you mean?"
"Well, demons were seen as brutal and destructive, right? Like the ones we knew in Japan."
"Yeah, pretty much."
"But in this world, it’s different. They’re just a race with that name. They have a history of conflict with humans, but now there are peaceful relations with some countries. The demon race is just a race with that name, not inherently demonic."
"I see."
[Yes, that’s correct.]
At least our parents and the servants around us are good people, not like demons in Japan.
Although they do have some peculiar traits...
"So, gods exist in this world, but are they also just a race, not actual gods?"
[Ah, no. The gods of this world being akin to deities isn’t entirely incorrect.]
"Huh? But didn’t you say gods can’t directly interfere with the world or something?"
[That’s right. However, this world is unstable. When life first emerged, gods provided some assistance to ensure life wouldn’t perish. They sent apostles, or rather angels. These angels helped stabilize the world. Even after stability was achieved, they kept angels around to monitor the world. Occasionally, some gods remain in their world as vessels. The gods of this world are descendants of such beings. So, it’s not entirely wrong to say they are like gods.]
"Then what about fallen angels?"
[Fallen angels are simply angels who mingled with demons. Essentially, fallen angels and regular angels are the same. There’s no fundamental difference.]
"Then why were Ai and I born as fallen angels?"
[That’s because I made adjustments. Fallen angels are higher beings among the species in their world, being descendants of gods. I wanted you to face gods, so I made you descendants of gods.]
"Then why am I a succubus?"
[That was to prioritize your wish. Don’t complain.]
""“Wish?””""
"Never mind! Forget about it!"
It didn’t seem like she was really letting it go.
Well, whatever. Pressing further might stir up trouble.
"But if they’re descendants of gods, can we not ask them for help?"
[That would be difficult. Most of them have lost their powers and memories from when they were proper angels or vessels for gods. A long time has passed. They also seem to no longer hear our voices. They’ve spent so long in your world that they’ve lost the ability to hear divine voices. Only those who can listen can hear me like this. Thus, I can’t secure their cooperation.]
That’s unfortunate.
I thought getting help from the divine race would be beneficial.
[Do you have any other questions? If not, it’s almost time to end.]
"Not right now. Anything from you, Ai?"
"I don’t have anything."
"Neither do I. But I wish you’d respond to our calls a bit more. I’ve called several times but never got a response."
[We’re busy too. We can’t always focus on you. There are others reincarnated in different dimensions. Also, simply trying once or twice isn’t enough to reach me. You need to call seriously. Farewell.]
With that, the voice of the gods cut off, ending the conversation.
But if there’s no progress on their end either, it’s troubling.
I thought no news meant things were resolved, but that might have been too optimistic.
I just want to live peacefully.
