Chapter 60. Assassin

“Well, we’ve got our stuff, so let’s just go home today... Though you might not enjoy wandering around the capital, right?”

“As expected.”

You know me quite well, Princess Elissa. Saying you didn't know was a lie, wasn't it? Just kidding... The students following us from behind disappeared at some point... But for some reason, Nina and Princess Elissa’s faction members started fighting, and Elixira was desperately trying to stop them. Sorry, Elixira... Just sacrifice yourself for us.

After confirming Elixira's sacrifice, I signaled with hand gestures to Princess Elissa that I wanted to talk secretly. It didn't seem to convey very well... but she followed me anyway, so that’s good.

“What do you intend to do by bringing me into this deserted alley?”

“I wanted to talk about the country being controlled from behind the scenes─”

I was about to say, when a robed figure suddenly appeared from nowhere and threw a knife at Princess Elissa. I deflected it with my bare hands.

“...We’re in the middle of something, could you come back later?”

The high tension I had from receiving a surprise gift from Princess Elissa plummeted rapidly. What an inconsiderate bunch... I thought I could sleep while maintaining this high tension today, but why are they so oblivious to the mood?

“You are not a target for elimination. Move aside.”

“Theodore Anthem... that’s my name. Are you sure I’m not a target for elimination?”

Ignoring my question, he threw another knife at me. Didn’t he just say I wasn’t a target for elimination, yet he’s attacking me anyway? I caught the knife and noticed some kind of liquid on it. Bringing it close to my nose, I smelled a pungent odor that numbed my senses.

“Is this a paralytic drug?”

“Sleep.”

“This is an anesthetic! A drug that affects the nerves just by smelling it should probably not be used for anything other than killing!”

Taking such a strong anesthetic directly would definitely kill me!

“Excuse me for a moment!”

“Kya!?”

“Bear with me for a bit!”

Since their target was clearly Princess Elissa, I picked her up in my arms and leaped onto the roof. Fighting in a deserted, maze-like alley is a perfect disadvantage against assassins. We should escape.

Even though I don’t think I’d lose in a direct fight... it’s tough to protect Princess Elissa and avoid damaging the surrounding buildings while fighting multiple assassins. As I ran on the roof, more assassins jumped out, likely positioned as a backup. They were all robed and masked, but... it’s clear they belong to the same cult I encountered in the alleys of the capital before.

“Hey, is there any magic that only targets the enemies in this situation?”

“There’s no such convenient magic!”

“Thought so.”

Guess I’ll have to manage somehow.

The one who first attacked seems to be the leader, staying a step behind the others. My goal is to capture him alive and get him to spill everything. In other words... the others are unnecessary.

“It’s going to get rough.”

“Bring it on!”

With Princess Elissa in my arms, my actions are limited, and I can’t run at full speed, but there are six enemies excluding the leader... I can manage.

The one at the front threw a knife, which I kicked, making it stab another’s body. That strong anesthetic should have some effect, even on assassins trained to resist it. Next, I broke the neck of the one who got close, using my legs. Four left.

“All at once!”

“Princess.”

“Are you really doing this? Got it!”

Following the leader's command, the four attacked simultaneously, but Princess Elissa was faster, casting a spell.

The spell she cast was a basic, homing missile-like magic that tracks the opponent's magic. Its accuracy is not perfect, but it’s effective against these assassins. The coordination breaks down.

“Sorry, but I just want to win. Don’t call it cheating.”

I activated the wind magic circle in my shoe, cutting off an assassin’s head as he tried to escape the homing magic.

“You can do that?”

“It’s handy. It’s disposable, so I’ll have to redraw the magic circle later.”

As a hidden weapon, this is highly effective. The assassins hesitated to close the distance, wary of my magic. I said the shoe magic is disposable, but I only used my right shoe. They might think I have more tricks. Mistrustful minds are easy to manipulate.

When I lifted my left leg, the assassins jumped back, cautious of my magic.

“Hah!”

But it was Princess Elissa who cast a spell. A solidified magic bullet flew straight and fast, piercing through the target. It’s like a bullet, but not as fast. A regular magic knight could dodge it, but an assassin who jumped away from my supposed magic couldn’t avoid it.

“Two left... huh?”

Just as I thought I could win even in a direct fight, an explosion sounded from below.

Both the assassins and we were startled by the explosion, but I quickly grasped the situation. I threw a knife at the closest assassin’s neck, activated the magic circle on it when he deflected it, and blew up his body.

As I triggered the explosion, Nina emerged from below with another explosion, immediately understanding the situation and breaking the neck of the non-leader assassin. What grip strength does she have?

“Now it’s just you.”

“So, what’s the situation, Theo?”

Oh, I didn’t grasp the situation.
