Chapter 26. Subjugation Request For The Beast

Beasts are said to be animals that have evolved by taking in magical elements from the air, but their true origin is unknown. The common belief in this world is that they are the minions created by the evil god to oppose the goddess of creation.

Honestly, I don't understand what they're talking about, but in a world where the theory of evolution hasn't been proposed, humans are believed to be noble beings created by the goddess. Religion exists in every country and era.

So, these beasts said to be the evil god's minions come in a wide range from strong to weak. Some are said to be legendary, colossal beasts, but I don't know much about them. However, beasts often appear on highways and attack people, so subjugation requests are always being issued.

"So? What's the target this time?"

"A herd of dozens of magic boars appeared in the plains near the southern highway from the capital. They don't seem too tough, but dealing with multiple enemies is troublesome."

"Huh? Isn't this too much for current students?"

"I asked for the request to be passed to us."

Ivy's smile was truly that of a shady person.

Behind me, Elixira was screaming as if announcing the end of the world, and, well... I did feel a bit sorry for her.

"We absolutely have to get rid of the magic boar herd, right?"

"Well... yes, but..."

"Then there's no problem. We'll split the reward properly."

This woman... she's seriously dangerous. Or maybe you have to be this crazy to become the 5th-ranked commoner.

Even so, I can't figure out her motive at all. She acts like she's working for the country's sake, but can someone who smiles so shadily really be thinking about that?

Ivy said she didn't know much about Elixira, but to me, Ivy is also an enigma. It's like looking into a bottomless pit from which there's no return. I can't put it into words, but there's something eerie about her. However, the benefits of joining her faction outweigh the risks.

As we walked along the highway from the capital, there were noticeably fewer carriages and people. The southern highway is the main route to the capital, so it's usually bustling with merchants, but today it's unusually quiet. The few carriages that we did see had formidable guards. The rumor about the magic boars must be true.

"This is a job for the Magic Knights, isn't it?"

"Beast subjugation is mainly the work of adventurers. Unless adventurers can't handle it or a catastrophic beast appears, the Magic Knights don't get involved."

"Well, thanks to that, there are hardly any bandits near the capital."

Even without advanced technology, the capital's security is excellent because the Magic Knights keep a vigilant eye. However, bandits do appear in places far from the capital. They prioritize their survival and avoid risks, so they don't come near the capital.

"The Magic Knights have a tough job, too."

"Your family head was the first leader of the Magic Knights, right?"

"Uh... yes, but..."

"Hey, is that the rumored magic boar?"

I wasn't trying to help, but I noticed a reddish-brown object at the edge of my vision and spoke up. Ivy, who had been scolding Elixira, looked in the direction I pointed and smiled.

"That's definitely the magic boar we're after."

"Only one, though."

Despite being near the highway, the magic boar was digging the ground and eating something without care. There was only one, but the trampled grass around suggested a large herd.

"Be cautious. I don't see any other magic boars, but I have a bad feeling."

"I just have to defeat it, right?"

"Hey, idiot."

Whether she wanted to prove her strength or because it was a small magic boar, Elixira dashed out alone despite our efforts to stay hidden.

I considered helping, but Ivy's serious expression as she watched Elixira made me realize she wanted to gauge Elixira's abilities. So, I held back.

"[Raziel]"

"Is that a Grimoire?"

I was curious about how Elixira, a Magic Knight without a sword, would fight. She summoned her Grimoire, a radiant magical book, which floated near her and opened its pages. The magic she released had a density unthinkable for someone ranked 984th until recently.

"Take this!"

As Elixira held the mystical book in her left hand and thrust out her right, flames burst forth with incredible force, incinerating the magic boar instantly.

"How was that? I can do it if I try!"

"What kind of Grimoire is that?"

I was surprised she revealed her Grimoire, but Ivy seemed more interested in its abilities.

Though she exposed her Grimoire, [Raziel], her actions only revealed she could use magic through it. I could guess its abilities, though. It seemed to reflect Elixira's soul well.

"Oh."

A larger magic boar appeared behind the ecstatic Elixira.

"So they dig underground? I've never heard of that."

As the huge magic boar emerged, kicking up dirt, Elixira froze.

Guess I'll have to help... I told her not to rush ahead.
