Chapter 9.1. Field Officer

A field officer. The military is a very small number of these officers. There are very few of them. Nagae Marume is a major and one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Tokyo. He's named after a warlord, a recent fashion. His original name is a secret. It's easy to understand because the general is called something else, even if he's treated as a major.

This is not only because it is fashionable. That's because there are those among the enemy who has the real name and take advantage of it. The truth isn't known, and Marume himself has never seen such an enemy, so he thinks it raises some eyebrows, but it's the policy of the higher-ups, so there is nothing he can do about it. Besides, he likes the name Maru. It fits his unique skills.

"Well, since it stinks, let's get this over with right away, shall we?"

In a somewhat high-pitched voice, he squints his foxy eyes and draws the Japanese sword at his waist. Behind him, soldiers are holding assault rifles, but he has no intention of letting them use them. Bullets are precious.

However, not all of them have Japanese swords at their waists. Others have military knives. They're not imitating the soldiers of the former Empire of Japan. They carry them because they are necessary for Marume.

A sharp but fragile Japanese sword that bends quickly and loses its sharpness to fat. That is what he needs. Well, this Japanese sword is different from the conventional one and far more durable.

Ten goblins and two hobgoblins are coming toward him, and behind them he sees a goblin knight clad in a full of seams and a great sword that looks like an iron plate, probably meant for striking. Perhaps an archer is also hiding.

"Just take care of the archer."

He gives the order while waiting for the enemy in the upper stance, and with a few pangs, he sees the goblin archer fall into the shadows of the building. If it were his elite troops, they would be no problem.

However, it would take several hundred bullets to defeat this number. He's there to prevent that.

Deep down inside, he thinks that he would have more power if bullets were eliminated, but knows that without bullets, he wouldn't be able to protect the inner city.

He thinks he should make a little achievement here, he activates the magic power that goes around in his body and gathers it in his palm.

[Crystal Blade]

The Japanese sword turns into a shimmering crystal and returns to the sunlight.

"You trash. It's good to be the rust on my Japanese sword."

Marume slips and slides closer to the goblin and screams.

"Chesto!"

The sword shimmers and swings down with such sharp speed cracks the goblin from the top of the head. With a return blow, he cleaves the next goblin in a sideways swipe.

"Gob!"

The goblin wields a crude club, its mouth twisted ruthlessly, and he matches his sword with it. The sword, which seemed to be about to plunge into the club, slips past without resistance and slashes the goblin in an overhanded manner.

"Kuku. My crystal sword is not dated."

With a hiss and a wind-slashing sound, Marume continued to swing his sword, and the goblins died, sprinkling fresh blood with each swing.

[Rush]

The hobgoblins clench their fists and use their martial arts. A fist that outstrips even the heaviest puncher attempts to strike Marume to death.

[Wind strike].

As he swings his sword in a twisting motion, the hobgoblin's arm splits into several pieces and falls to the ground.

"Gkhaa!"

He gives chase to the hobgoblin, which retreats with a cry of anguish, knocks it down, then cuts up from the bottom to the other one, which is frightened, and easily defeats it.

[Hard Slash]

As Marume tumbles backward and kicks the ground, a plate of iron passes by, hitting the ground and making a roaring sound.

The goblin knight glared at Marume with an angry expression.

"Hmph, the monster-like creature isn't angry with me."

Goblin Knight. It's a monster with a plate of iron strapped to its body. In its hand, it holds a large sword like a plate of iron and is called a goblin knight. It's a nasty enemy with robustness and strength that makes it impossible to defeat without using several assault rifle magazines.

It's more of an iron cudgel than a sword. The goblin knight has more muscle than a hobgoblin. A blow from a goblin knight would rupture the internal organs and kill a human being.

It swung its greatsword in a blur, and as if to show its power, the wind hit Marume's face. Marume, seeing the power of the iron mass, doesn't hide his thin smile and slinks backward, never to be hit.

The goblin knight seems to have swordsmanship skills, even though its sword muscles are standing and his sword speed is fast enough.

"Heck. A fan would be better."

With a cold smile, he raises his sword and puts his magic power into it. Noticing the magic, the goblin knight laid his sword down and used it as a shield, but Marume didn't care.

"A stroke of a master swordsman. Taste it for yourself. [Goban Slash]."

With a gust of sword wind, the crystal sword swung down with a red aura. With a metallic sound, the sword slices through the goblin knight's steel-plate-like sword and then slices through its armor.

Then, just before it touched the ground, he stopped the sword and swung it with a snap. The body of the goblin knight in iron armor split in two, and he fell with a thud.

"Kuku. I once cut a 100-centimeter block of iron."

When he un-crystallized the sword, it became a clean blade without any blood stains. With a flip of his wrist and a light ding, he sheathed it.

"The enemy is destroyed. Get on with the investigation. It stinks, stinks, stinks."

Taking out a handkerchief, Marume covered his nose and announced with a look of disgust.

"Understood, sir!"

After saluting with a whack, the soldiers show their fear of Marume's power and move busily in a hurry. With a sniff, Marume returns to the command vehicle, and after a while, the investigation is finished, and the national army heads elsewhere.

The residents of the abandoned town, watching this scene from the shadows, attached themselves to the abandoned goblin corpses and fought for the monster cores.

A black cat watched all of this from its perch in the shadows.
