Chapter 49.1. The Abnormal Girl

-Kazamichi's POV-

Kazamichi took down the sake cup and stared at Enrakuraku's face. In the noble world where evil spirits of rivers and mountains roam around, it's rare for him to show his surprise and dismay.

It was not an act of anger. But a sincere surprise and Kazamichi was too honest to show it.

"What did you just say?"

He heard and listened to it. But, he asks again because the words are lies, whether it's just a joke, or because he's come in out of refusal. That man was trying to surprise Kazamichi as much as possible, and he knew what he said was true, but he still asked back.

Enraku grins and laughs terrifyingly, like a predator with bait in front of it. His face seemed to rejoice at Kazemichi's astonishment, which was a shame.

"Like I said. Your granddaughter held a charity event at the orphanage."

"I don't care about that. The problem is after that."

Kazamichi squinted, caught his breath, put his surprise deep in his heart, and asked for another explanation. His granddaughter Miu is a good person. He knew this from his research, though it's not surprising, since she gets raised as the daughter of good people, Yoshiyuki, and his family.

She is popular at school among many children, both boys, and girls. The gray-haired girl, who resembles a silver-haired girl, laughs innocently and looks adorable. She sometimes shows a charisma that pulls people along with her giggles, and when she sees bullying, they say she immediately goes to the rescue.

So he didn't care if she did a charity event. That girl would do it. His granddaughter would do it. He thought so. No surprises. The problem was the following words.

"Miu held the charity event with the help of the Teijo family. She's just a child. She said she wanted to help the people in the slums, but they switched the subject to a charity event for an orphanage, but she held the event in no time."

"It's not a very big orphanage, is it?"

"It's a small, privately owned orphanage. It's just the right size to accommodate the whims of a child."

Enraku continues to talk while munching on the meat like a carnivore. That's an attitude unique to Japanese aristocrats, who, unlike their Western counterparts, are not subject to the same fussy etiquette. Enraku's gesture is perfectly suited to his outward personality.

"Its orphans sing a song and dance, and Miu thought it would be nice if there's some donation. Ouga was different. He wanted to add a little to her power base, so he gathered nobles with minor illnesses."

"Hmm, he calls a few dozen people and cures one of them of his illness. After that, she would cast recovery magic on a few of them, and that would be it. The participants wag their tails to the Teijo family so Miu would cure them at the next charity."

Kazamichi gulped down his sake. That's supposed to be done by the Count Takano family. We would expand their power base and revive a failing family.

If they're old people or have a disability, they would choose that over an asset that can earn 100 billion, if 100 million can keep them healthy. This is especially true of the nobility. When anyone feels old, the next step is to aim for health rather than money.

It is easy to imagine how good a deal a charity event like this would have been for the Teijo family.

"I thought your granddaughter's recovery magic is not very powerful. I guess they didn't expect her to be that good. But it turned out to be more than I expected."

"... Is it true?"

Without knowing it, Kazemichi gasped. He understands it's not a joke, but it's still unbelievable. Kazamichi nodded his head in disbelief. When Kazamichi heard the story, he was astonished, and repeatedly asked the person to confirm it was a lie.

"It is true. Miu cast [Cure Disease] on all the participants, all 30 of them. I heard she couldn't cure some people, but used the range healing many times after that."

"Impossible! Recovery magic that heals disease, and poison shouldn't be usable! Even the current saint would have to rest for several days after using it once to cure an illness!"

Kazamichi slammed the table and shouted at Enraku, his words rough. It was that unbelievable.

[Status Recovery]. That's easier said than done. Even if it's called magic, it's not omnipotent. Especially with recovery magic.

With offensive magic, one can say a [Powerful Word] with a vague idea of what it means, and if one has the aptitude for it, it can be activated.

But Recovery Magic is different. Poison is still easy to cure. Recovery magicians can cure it with the image of counteracting poison. In the case of a disease, the mana scans the state of the target's body to get healed. What is wrong with it? It requires extreme concentration to figure out what approach to cure it. It's not about how much mana you have. It becomes a problem of mental strength.

Once a recovery magician cures a disease, their body becomes tired and sluggish for some time. That was the conventional wisdom.

That's until now.

"Your granddaughter didn't seem to have any particular need for extreme concentration. That's my researcher's estimation. But she probably only thinks of it as a simple cure for [Abnormal Status]. She was fine with the recovery magic she used."

"...... That's not possible. Isn't that just magic in action? So she's a real saint, huh? But, Yoshiyuki, what will you do if something goes wrong, such as letting her use that much magic? I see! She didn't go to a magic academy."

He wonders why Yoshiyuki didn't stop Miu from using that much magic, and soon realizes. The common sense of recovery magic is only within the nobility. They only heard recovery magicians heal other people's bodies. That was all.

So, the commoners were mistaken. Recovery wizards are rare. Moreover, the number of times the magic depends on the amount of mana. Since there were very few recovery wizards, they thought only the nobles could use recovery magic.
