Chapter 126. The Celestials’ Past
[Among the celestials, the Seven Great Celestials were those who excelled in combat, with seven individuals chosen as Seraphs to lead them.]
“…Lucifer, weren’t you also a Seraph?”
[Don’t lump me in with such petty beings.]
So, Lucifer was in a position more like Sandalphon, wasn’t she?
[Michael wielded a sword to judge sinners regardless of race. Gabriel controlled water to protect allies. Raphael healed wounds and dealt cruel deaths to foes. Uriel possessed flames that could incinerate celestial enemies. Raguel commanded a light that even his comrades feared. Sariel embodied death through his shadow. And Ramiel controlled unparalleled lightning as if it were his own limbs.]
Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Raguel, Sariel, and Ramiel. Of these, [Michael], [Gabriel], [Sariel], and [Ramiel] have been confirmed… but I’ve never encountered Raphael, Uriel, or Raguel.
“With such powerful celestials, why couldn’t they defeat Claudius?”
[Hmph… There’s only one reason: celestials weren’t omnipotent or pristine beings.]
“They weren’t… pristine beings?”
[Girl from Kuria, if all of humanity united to defeat Claudius, do you think they could truly achieve complete unity?]
“…Impossible.”
[It’s the same. Celestials might have been a powerful race, but like humans, they couldn’t align their steps.]
I see… People often say humanity can unite against a common enemy, but that unity is always temporary. The moment the tide turns in their favor, humans fall apart. Arguments over how to collect funds after the battle, who deserves the biggest reward for their contributions, or even where that reward will come from… Can you really call that a winning strategy?
I thought demons were like devils and celestials like angels, but in the end, demons were demons, and celestials were just another race living their lives.
[The celestials splintered during battle. Led by Azazel, prominent celestials like Shemhazai, Barachiel, and Kokabiel opposed the Seven Great Celestials, plunging their race into a war of annihilation so severe it threatened their existence.]
“They went as far as a war of annihilation over internal disputes?”
[It only shows how hot-blooded they were. I’ve heard demons were also rife with internal killings.]
You’re both flawed races, aren’t you?
“Humans commit murders all the time. Just look at history; nations splitting is a common occurrence.”
“True enough.”
So, maybe we’re not so different.
“That war of annihilation is why celestials merged with human souls?”
[In the end, yes. The celestials under Michael labeled Azazel’s faction as fallen celestials and continued their slaughter… By the time they achieved victory, many prominent celestials were dead. In such a tattered state, they had no chance against Claudius… and their race perished.]
“But they survived by merging with humans.”
[If existing only as souls counts as surviving, then yes.]
As long as they have awareness, I’d say they survived. Many celestials probably lost that awareness… but at least not all of them vanished from this world.
[When Claudius threatened their extinction, it was Sandalphon who proposed merging their souls with humans to preserve their power. Thinking back… perhaps he foresaw humans rising to challenge Claudius.]
“…So Sandalphon’s actions were solely to defeat Claudius?”
From what I’ve heard, it’s clear Sandalphon occupied a unique position. Was the Interior Minister Frodil capable because he had that power, or did Sandalphon entrust him because he was capable…? We may never know.
“The Gargaliel inside me was on Michael’s side, right?”
[Yes. The third-ranked Thrones were led by Raphael, and one of his direct subordinates is the Gargaliel sleeping within you—a celestial who wielded the solar sphere. A lively and annoyingly cheerful fellow.]
“Don’t tell me things I don’t need to know!”
Haha, well, celestials had personalities just like anyone else. It makes sense they’d have their quirks.
“Tell me more about the other celestials.”
[Their powers?]
“No, their personalities. What they liked, what they hated… what they were like as individuals.”
[…You’re an odd one. Today’s celestials are just power; such details are irrelevant.]
Even so, we’re the only ones who can learn about these celestials erased from history. I don’t know if my notes will survive for future generations… but I want to preserve them in our memories as much as possible.
[Very well, I’ll tell you about the celestials… as narrated by the greatest and strongest celestial, this Lucifer-sama.]
“…By the way, what were you doing while the celestials were at war?”
“You were probably imprisoned or something. You’re uncooperative and likely disliked by both Michael’s and Azazel’s factions.”
[Are you picking a fight with me? Huh?]
That’s probably the truth.
[Ha. My intellect was too refined for their understanding… I allowed myself to be captured by Metatron on purpose.]
“So you were captured.”
See? Strong but a dysfunctional personality—that’s why you got locked up.
[It’s lamentable how everyone danced to the tune of that wretch Michael.]
“Do you hold a grudge against Michael or something? Oh wait, you totally do.”
How petty… The greatest and strongest celestial has such a small heart.
[Michael would harp on about rules, humility, and how intellectual curiosity leads to ruin… He was a nagging, tedious man. And with his good looks, he thought flashing a charming smile would solve everything. I lost count of how many times I punched that face.]
So you didn’t just want to punch him, you actually did it. And from your description, Michael sounds like a stricter version of Jeremiah, which is kind of hilarious.
